Tourists spots

The Seto River and White-walled storehouses

About 3 minutes on foot from Hida Furukawa Station
Hida Furukawa's townscape developed as a shogunal demesne (a land directly controlled by the Edo government) in the Edo Era in the same way as Takayama, and the old townscapes such as Ichinomachi, Ninomachi or Sannomachi still remain today. As the merchant houses with latticed bay windows and the townscape with white earth storehouses are slightly different from those of Takayama, it is a recommended spot for a stroll around town.

Hida no Takumi Bunkakan

About 5 minutes on foot from Hida Furukawa Station
The carpenters in Hida decorate the space under the eaves of the houses they build with "cloud" carvings. A "cloud" is something like an emblem with a shape unique to each carpenter, and this is a big feature that can be seen under the house eaves in Hida. Takumi Bunkakan (Craft Museum) was built by the local carpenters who inherited "Takumi no waza" (master craftsmanship) without using any pegs, and you can see the craftsmanship, such as the wood splicing method or wood joining method, inside the Museum.

Furukawa Festival

Furukawa festival is an annual celebration of the Keta Wakamiya Shrine held on April 19 and 20 every year. It is a historical festival designated as a national important intangible cultural heritage. Many tourists visit here to experience the air of excitement and impressiveness of "Okoshidaiko" every year. In "Okoshidaiko" performed on the night of the 19th, two young men move around the city riding back to back on a big drum and beat the big drum alternately by swinging down the handcrafted sticks with a length of around 90 cm. It is a lively and peculiar festival where the battles with other young men's brigades, who shoulder the small drums, called Tsuke daiko, go on until the late hours.

Honkoji Temple

0 min. from Honkoji bus stop
The main hall of Honkoiji is the largest wooden architecture in the Hida region and boasts the greatest presence in the city. Honkoji is one of the three temples people visit during the winter feature of Hidafurukawa, “Santeramairi” (visit to three temples), held on January 15 every year. The literary monument was constructed in commemoration of the novel "Nomugitoge Pass" which described the conditions of young Hida female factory workers who went away to work in Shinshu where the silk industry was prosper at that time.

Visit the tourist spot that the movie "Your Name" was modeled after

The Hida City is part of the scenery that appeared in the blockbuster animated movie directed by Makoto Shinkai, "Your Name." Many movie fans from all over Japan and abroad visit here to enjoy experiencing a holy site that appeared in the movie.

From Takayama to Kamioka

Kamioka-cho flourished as a mining town and still remains as a town with mysterious charm which makes us nostalgic for the Showa Era through the original fragrance of prosperity. The water of the town is so clean and clear that you can see the riverbeds of the rivers threaded through the urban area. You can enjoy stroll along a mountain stream or an easy walk taking a rest at the public Mizuya (roadside rest area with drinking water).
It takes about 45 minutes to get to Kamioka from Hidafurukawa by bus. There are about 2 buses per hour that are available on weekdays. Please note that there are fewer bus services on weekends and holidays.

Rail Mountain Bike "Gattan Go!!"

"Gattan Go!!" is a new style of ride with which you can run on the rails of the former Kamioka Railway on a mountain bike. Along the 6 km round trip ride you can enjoy the thrilling dark and cool tunnel and overpass, cherry blossom trees in full bloom in spring, beautiful green and plenty of sunlight in summer and beautifully colored leaves in autumn. The scenery along the railroad changes its expression depending on the season. You can enjoy the activity while feeling the wind and scenery all around you.

Kamioka Castle

Kamioka Castle was constructed by Tokimori Ema under the orders of Masakage Yamagata, a chief vassal to Shingen Takeda, as a base for invasion into Etchu. Since then a liegeman to Takayama Castle, Lord Nagachika Kanamori, took the roll of castle keeper, but the castle was deserted by orders from Edo government. Kamioka Castle is located on the upland where it overlooks the townscape and was reconstructed in 1970 as a symbol of the town.

Ema-si Yakata-ato Park

Ema-si Yakata-ato Park is a park where an old samurai residence owned by a military commander, Ema-si (clan Ema), who governed the North-Hida region about 600 years ago, from the Muromachi Era to the Age of Provincial Wars, was reconstructed. The garden, meeting hall where you can view the garden, main gate and mud walls were reconstructed after it was designated as National Historic Site together with 6 other mountain castles in Kamioka-cho.

Stroll around town feeling as if you are in the Showa Era

The town of Kamioka is a town which somewhat reminds you of an old memory, as if you slipped back in time to the Showa Era. We suggest you to walk around the town with a guide who is a local expert and knows everything about the area. Enjoy your stroll getting in touch with Kamioka's history and hidden charm that can't be found in tourist maps or guidebooks.

Mizuya walking tour

Kamioka-cho is the water-rich town where natural spring water flows throughout the year. This is because the town of Kamioka is located on the landform called a stream terrace surrounded by high mountains. The spring water called "Hunatsu Obora spring water" is designated as one of the Gifu Prefecture's Selected Famous Waters. Several "Mizuyas" with history and nice atmosphere dot the town where you can enjoy the natural spring water such as "Yanagawa Mizuya," "Ushigakuchi Mizuya," "Sakae-machi Mizuya," and "Ohtsu-machi Mizuya." Why don't you enjoy the "Mizuya walking tour" while strolling in the retro townscape?

Fujinami Hatcho

The Takahara River flows north to south through the center of Kamioka. The rugged, precipitous gorge stretching approximately 500 meters from Fujinami Bridge to Kamioka Bridge is known as "Fujinami Hatcho." A 900-meter riverside promenade allows visitors to enjoy a pleasant stroll while taking in the scenic beauty of the canyon, the trees clinging to the rock faces, and views of Kamioka Castle and the nostalgic townscape on the opposite bank. The area is also famous for its stunning autumn colors; the 200-meter "tunnel of maples" is a magnificent sight, and the foliage is illuminated starting from late October.
