Tourists spots

Shirakawa-go

The “Gassho-zukuri” houses in Shirakawa-go are traditional dwellings characterized by steep, thatched roofs built to look like hands pressed together in prayer. The roofs have a steep incline of 45 to 60 degrees, a structural design perfectly adapted to Shirakawa Village’s harsh natural environment, which sees heavy and dense snowfall. To withstand the elements, all buildings face north to south to minimize wind resistance, and the roof angles are crafted to optimize sunlight—keeping the interiors cool in summer and warm in winter through centuries-old local wisdom.

Gokayama Ainokura Gassho Village

The Ainokura village features 20 standing gassho-zukuri houses where local residents still live today. The beautiful landscape evokes the nostalgic, pristine scenery of old Japan. No matter which season you visit, time flows gently here. It is a magical destination where you can step away from daily life and enjoy a deeply peaceful, relaxing atmosphere.

Shinhotaka Ropeway

Reopened with brand new updates in July 2020! Ride Japan’s only double-decker gondola to step out above the clouds at an altitude of 2,156 meters. A magnificent, grand panorama of the Northern Alps awaits you.

Kamikochi

An international mountain resort first introduced to the world by the British missionary Walter Weston. Immerse yourself in the stunning, picturesque landscapes that unfold along the banks of the Azusa River.

Hida Great Limestone Cave

Around 250 million years ago, this area was deep beneath the ocean. Today, this massive 800-meter cave opens into a mystical subterranean world. The best part? No special gear or heavy equipment is needed to explore—anyone can walk right in and enjoy the adventure! (Just be sure to wear comfortable shoes and clothes for walking). Officially certified as a “Lover’s Sanctuary,” it is also a highly popular romantic spot for couples.

Hida Furukawa: Seto River and White-Walled Storehouses

(A 3-minute walk from the Furukawa Ekimae Bus Stop)
Much like the historic streets of Takayama, Hida Furukawa flourished as a “Tenryo” (land under the direct control of the Tokugawa shogunate) during the固定 Edo period. The historic townscape of Ichino-machi, Nino-machi, and Sanno-machi remains beautifully preserved. The merchant houses with latticed windows and the iconic white-walled storehouses offer a slightly quieter, distinct charm compared to Takayama, making it a highly recommended spot for a leisurely stroll.

Hida no Sato (Hida Folk Village)

Hida no Sato is an open-air museum where traditional thatched-roof “Gassho-zukuri” houses and old farmhouses from across the Hida region have been carefully relocated and preserved.

Takayama City

A city brimming with photogenic charm at every corner, Takayama features the “Old Town” which retains the distinct atmosphere of an Edo-period castle town, the world-famous Takayama Festival (one of Japan’s three most beautiful festivals), premium Hida Beef, and the lively, warm-hearted Miyagawa Morning Market.
