Depart Takayama Nohi Bus terminal (Platform 1, bound for Asahi Branch Office)
Get off at the Asahi Shisyo bus stop.
After getting off, we’ll head to the “Mangoku Yakushido’s Weeping Cherry Tree”!
This weeping cherry tree (Shidarezakura) is approximately 200 years old and is of the Edo-Higan variety. Its delicate pink blossoms cascade downwards, creating a breathtaking canopy over the path.
The weeping cherry tree at Aoya Shinmei Shrine is one of the most popular in Asahi. A rice paddy stretches out in front of the tree, creating a stunning “upside-down cherry blossom” reflection on the water’s surface.
This shrine is famous for its two cherry trees. One is a 450-year-old Edo-Higan cherry tree with a trunk circumference of 5.2 meters. The other is a large weeping cherry tree located on the east side of the shrine grounds, known as “Shinmei Sakura.”
This tree was transplanted from Hachiman Shrine in Mangoku, Asahi Town. The shrine also houses a circular Enku Buddha statue (Shinzou), which is designated as a city-designated tangible cultural property.
